Cheick Kongo lost more than a fight this Saturday; according to reports–including one from his manager–he also lost a place on UFC’s active roster.
UFC made the call to part ways with Kongo following his UFC 159 knockout loss to Roy Nelson. Though he was not on a losing streak, the once-highly-touted Kongo was unimpressive in victory against Shawn Jordan at UFC 142. Prior to that fight, he suffered a first-round TKO defeat to Mark Hunt.
“I am sad to report that Cheick Kongo was released by the UFC today,” wrote Kongo’s manager Alden Halpern.
According to MMA Fighting, Kongo rejected a proposed four-fight deal prior to the Nelson fight. UFC did not return with a new contract after his defeat, and Kongo is now, at least for the interim, a free agent.
