Cam will be joining forces with mainstream girl group Fifth Harmony at Wednesday’s CMT Music Awards, and the rising country star alerts Harmonizers to prepare for an “insane” performance.
“All Harmonizers, be ready,” teases Cam in a backstage CMT interview that was issued to media outlets late Tuesday. “It’s going to be insane.”
“I am the sixth member of Fifth Harmony, which I’m really excited about” cracks a jubilant Cam. “They are like the cutest girls, the sweetest people in person.”
Noting the stigma some carry toward pop stars, Cam confirms, “They’re real people, super sweet.”
“We all just immediately got along,” adds the artist.
“They’re just so excited to be here, and they’re really grateful [for the opportunity].”
Cam touts the strong working relationship they developed; she and the Fifth Harmony members were all respectful and cordial in determining who gets to sing which parts and making sure they were not stepping on toes.
The two acts are set to perform a mash-up of Cam’s “Mayday” and Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home” at the ceremony.
“So there’s a mash-up of ‘Mayday’ with, like, remixed drums going on, and then it sort of transitions into ‘Work From Home,” explains Cam.
The “Mayday” hook will then re-emerge in the concluding moments of the performance.
“My band is so good; my musical director put the whole transition part together, and it just sounds awesome,” boasts Cam.
It may feature Cam and be taking place on the CMT Awards stage, but it is still a Fifth Harmony performance. So there will be dancing.
The “Burning House” and “Mayday” singer-songwriter notes, “They incorporated me into, like, ‘mini dance moves’ because I’m not a dancer. ‘Just walk like this, pop your hip like this,’ so, fingers crossed.
“The singing sounds amazing, obviously. So, yeah, as long as I hit my dance marks, we’re going to be good!”
While Cam’s live set does not typically feature choreography, she is “really excited” for the opportunity to incorporate some dancing into her performance Wednesday night.
In addition to Fifth Harmony, the CMT Awards will feature performances by mainstream acts like Pitbull, Pharrell and Leona Lewis. Cam appreciates the diverse approach to the show.
“As an artist, you get so busy, and you’re so in your own world and your own music,” explains Cam. “It takes an event like this to sort of get a mix going on [and allow you to] meet people outside of your immediate band. It’s really nice to get to work people who also love music – do it every day – and understand a lot of what it is that you’re doing but they just have a different sound and style.
“That’s a big part of growth, getting better…being around other musicians, so I’m really appreciative that I got the chance to hang out with them.”
The CMT Music Awards air Wednesday night at 8PM ET.
