While “Teen Beach 2” easily ranked as cable’s top Friday program, its viewership markedly trailed that of 2013’s “Teen Beach Movie.”
Airing from 8-9:55PM, the sequel drew a 1.03 adults 18-49 rating with 5.823 million viewers. Both numbers trail those drawn by the 2013 original, which posted a 1.2 rating with 8.388 million viewers.
That drop is too significant to ignore. Disney can, however, tout a number of positive achievements associated with its “Teen Beach 2” premiere.
In addition to ranking as Friday’s most-watched cable show, the movie also set two-year cable highs (since “Teen Beach Movie”) in kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14.
“Teen Beach 2” led into the premiere of Disney Channel’s “Best Friends Whenever.” The inaugural episode garnered a 0.59 adults 18-49 rating with 3.536 million viewers.
As a point of comparison, the January premiere of Disney’s “KC Undercover” posted a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating with 3.51 million viewers. It did not, however, receive lead-in support from an original Disney movie.
While the 2014 premiere of “Girl Meets World” (1.3, 5.16 million) did air out of a movie (“Zapped,” 1.0, 5.67), its association with the classic “Boy Meets World” franchise assures the comparison is not apples-to-apples.
