In moving what Nielsen Music reports as 26,696 traditional copies during the week ending April 12, Taylor Swift’s “1989” suffered a week-over-week decline of 31%.
Neither she nor the rest of the music industry will dwell on that statistic. They will instead focus on the fact that her album’s year-to-date US sales total now exceeds one million.
Going into the most recent tracking week, “1989” boasted a 2015 sales total just shy of 988,000. The addition of 26,696 sales to that tally improves the year-to-date sum to nearly 1.015 million.
Swift’s album, which was released on October 27, 2014, is thus far the only album to sell at least 1 million copies in 2015.
Insofar as it had sold roughly 3.661 million copies prior to the start of 2015, it now possesses a release-to-date US sales total of approximately 4.676 million.
Estimated data from global markets suggests its worldwide sales total is nearing the 7 million mark.
