Update: The overnight ratings painted a far too rosy picture of Thursday’s “Reign” performance.
The second episode of The CW’s period drama slipped to a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating with 1.83 million viewers. While its demo rating still reigns over that of series like “Hart of Dixie,” the 25% drop is troubling given that last week’s premiere number was already underwhelming.
Lead-in “The Vampire Diaries” drew a 1.3 with 2.63 million viewers.

Last week’s premiere numbers did not befit its hype, but The CW’s “Reign” can at least smile about avoiding a major drop in week two.
According to TV Media Insights, “Reign” declined by 7% to a 1.4 overnight metered market rating. Considering its “The Vampire Diaries” lead-in slipped by 10%, “Reign”‘s follow-up performance demonstrated as much consistency as the network could have expected.
Whether the same level of stability is true of the pivotal adults 18-49 numbers remains to be seen, but it seems safe to assume that the show did not tank in that demographic.
The show’s 0.1 slip in the overnights mirrors that experienced by episode two of fellow CW newcomer “The Tomorrow People.” That show, unfortunately, then traded away another two-tenths for its third episode this week.
