The show is nowhere near as big, but Sunday’s WWE Extreme Rules, featuring Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena as the main-event, has as much intrigue as Cena’s preceding PPV bout with The Rock.
As a very pricey, year-long investment, Lesnar truly should represent the priority in this bout, and no matter how the finish is booked, he needs to look like the superior draw. In addition to potential more Lesnar vs. Cena this year, F4WOnline.com reports that WWE is also eyeing Lesnar vs. Orton and possibly even Lesnar vs. CM Punk on the road to a WrestleMania match with someone like The Rock, Steve Austin or Undertaker.
He will not be around every week, but as a key part of WWE’s pay-per-view strategy for the year, he has to look strong.
That said, John Cena is coming off a loss to a non-regular performer and has looked weak in the build-up to this match, so there will obviously be a school of thought pushing for an even, back-and-forth match.
As it stands, there are actually major “insiders” who don’t get the business and don’t even feel Lesnar should be booked above regular talent like Cena, Punk and Orton, so if WWE were to do something along the lines of the infamous Edge-Matt Hardy beatdown from their “worked shoot” feud, it would get a negative reaction even if represents the best overall idea for business.
Working in WWE’s favor is the fact that the company has two potential show-stealers in Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk and Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan, so it does not need an epic main-event to save the show.
