HBO Cancels “Bored to Death,” “Hung,” “How to Make it in America”

Tuesday was not a great day for comedies at HBO; the premium network canceled three of its four humorous series.

Following their second and third seasons, respectively, Sunday comedies “How to Make it in America” and “Hung” are officially done. Neither, particularly, the former, had performed well in the ratings this year, and as neither generates sufficient critical acclaim or buzz (though “Hung” has garnered the occasional award nomination), it made sense for HBO to part ways with the series, especially with a number of potential series in development.

“Bored to Death” had a high-profile cast with Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis, but its ratings were also quite low–the same 2.3 million per week across all platforms as “America”–and it was time to move on.

Interestingly, “Enlightened,” the lowest-rated of HBO’s comedies, is the one that received a second season renewal.
