Another surprise-free cancellation announcement: ABC is parting ways with freshman flop “Charlie’s Angels.”
After premiering to lackluster but tolerable ratings, “Angels” quickly sank into the abyss. While its adults 18-49 rating technically improved this week to a 1.3, it actually lost in the timeslot to The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” an embarrassing reality for an ABC series.
No favorite from a creative standpoint, the show also suffered due to what many contend was a poorly-cast leading trio. While Minka Kelly has gained fame for her relationship with Derek Jeter and positioning in “hottest women alive” rankings, she is hardly a beacon of charisma and was always an acting weak-spot on the acclaimed “Friday Night Lights.”
Rachael Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh are both attractive, but they also have been criticized for lacking the star power and “punch” to carry a series like this.
ABC has not yet formally pulled “Angels” from the schedule, but the cancellation news confirms there will be no back-nine order.
