The pairing of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts was not enough to drive “Larry Crowne” to an impressive box office debut Friday, and its weekend trajectory is now looking to fall way short of estimates.
With $4 million in gross Friday and a fourth place finish, the film will only land in the low-to-mid teens for the weekend. Previous projections were looking for about $20 million, a total that already would have been somewhat modest given the star power and the lack of older-skewing competition.
Selena Gomez, meanwhile, continues to disappoint as a box office draw–her “Monte Carlo” earned only about $3 million Friday and might not reach the $10 million mark by Sunday. Though not any worse than late tracking forecasted, the performance is still a mark against the Disney star’s drawing power. “Monte Carlo” was fifth on the Friday charts.
“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” led the box office with about $33 million in Friday receipts, which puts its cumulative total at just shy of $100 million. It is expected to do another $60 million or so by Sunday.
