No matter how many times they were revised, the lofty projections for “Fast Five” could not keep up with its dominant box office performance.
The latest “The Fast & The Furious” sequel garnered an estimated $83.6 million in box office receipts to crush the weekend box office. “Rio,” the next-closest competitor, was good for only $14.4 million. It did, however, top the $100 million mark this weekend.
“Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family” landed at third with $10.1 million, ahead of $9.1 million for “Water for Elephants.”
New release “Prom” absolutely bombed in fifth place, posting only $5 million in receipts. Fellow new release “Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil” landed at an even-weaker sixth-place with $4.1 million.
