Long-time WWE headliner Adam “Edge” Copeland formally announced his retirement during Monday’s live RAW telecast.
Having suffered from long-standing spinal issues, Edge recently began suffering from what WWE.com confirmed as “numbness and uncontrollable trembling in his arms and hands.” Though Edge has dealt with these symptoms before, a recent medical examination by Dr. Joseph Maroon revealed that he would no longer be able to perform due to the injury.
“After careful examination of the MRI, it was determined that Edge would never be cleared to compete again, and thus, he is forced to retire,” said the WWE story.
Following his spinal fusion, Edge’s spinal column began narrowing and losing the fluid needed to protect the spinal cord. “Medical professionals cannot clear Edge to compete ever again in WWE since doing so could result in paralysis or even death.”
A teary-eyed Edge announced the retirement to a respectful crowd that responded with a standing ovation and chants of “Thank you, Edge.” Footage revealed that the roster greeted him as he walked to the backstage area during the commercial break.
His World Heavyweight Championship is expected to be vacated on SmackDown!
