The addition of a 3D component has not always made for a guaranteed success, but it apparently did enhance interest in MTV’s “Jackass” series.
“Jackass 3D,” the latest in the franchise, dominated the weekend box office with a take of $50 million. A total of nearly double what the prior “Jackass: Number Two” took in its opening weekend, the estimated take, if it holds, would set the box office record for an October opening weekend.
Elsewhere, old-skewing “Red” performed admirably, scoring $22.5 million in its first outing. That tally positions it far ahead of third place finisher “The Social Network,” which added $11 million to its take in week three.
“Secretariat” and “Life as We Know It” were fourth and fifth with $9.5 million and $9.2 million, respectively.
Limited releases included “N-Secure” ($1.4 million from 486 screens), “Hereafter” ($231,000 from 6 screens) and “Conviction” ($110,000 from 11 screens).
