Rumors that “Easy A” star Emma Stone was to play a key female character in “Spider-Man” were officially confirmed Tuesday.
Interestingly, that character will not be Mary Jane Watson, the part for which Stone was viewed as a shoo-in. Instead, the actress, who also had notable parts in “Zombieland” and “Superbad,” will play Gwen Stacy.
The supposed shortlist for the part had featured names like “Glee”‘s Dianna Agron and “Alice in Wonderland”‘s Mia Wasikowska; Stone was never identified as a serious contender.
But in a press release from the studio, director Marc Webb confirmed that Stone’s chemistry with new Peter Parker Andrew Garfield (“The Social Network”) made the casting a no-brainer.
“The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde,” said Webb.
