3D-animated film “Despicable Me” was certainly not going to flop in its debut weekend, but there was still some skepticism about whether it would have enough power to top holdover “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” at the box office. It ended up having no trouble doing so.
“Despicable Me” grossed an estimated $60.1 million over the weekend, which amounted to a total of almost double the $33.4 million for “Eclipse.” “Eclipse,” nonetheless, is still performing strongly–its cumulative gross now sits at $237 million, which marks a slight increase from the $235.7 million “New Moon” had earned after twelve days at the box office last fall.
“Predators,” the only other major release this weekend, opened to $25.4 million for third place. “Toy Story 3” and “The Last Airbender” completed the top five with $22 million and $17.2 million, respectively.
One of the most noteworthy performers of the weekend, meanwhile, was “Grown Ups,” which landed in sixth place on a healthy performance of $16.4 million. Thanks to a particularly strong Saturday, the film’s gross only fell 14% from last week’s tally, a rare holdover success for an Adam Sandler-led film. Its total gross already sits at an impressive $111.3 million.
