Although “Grown Ups” earned a solid amount of cash in its box office debut this weekend, its failure to escape the standard box office level for an Adam Sandler film resulted in a second place finish for the comedy.
“Grown Ups,” which featured an all-star cast of Sandler allies, including notables like Chris Rock and Kevin James, opened to $41 million this weekend, placing it distantly behind holdover sensation “Toy Story 3” ($59 million). “Knight & Day,” which disappointed in its Wednesday debut, gained a hint of strength yet still disappointed with $20.5 million for the weekend.
“You Don’t Mess with the Zohan,” the last “traditional” Adam Sandler film (excluding the family-skewing “Bedtime Stories” and the Judd Apatow-directed, R-rated “Funny People”), opened to $38.5 million in 2008, so the special hype regarding the cast spurred minimal commercial impact.
“The Karate Kid” ($15.4 million) and “The A-Team” ($6 million) completed the top five.
