“Karate Kid” Chops “The A-Team” Down at Box Office

While final data from Friday’s box office race is not yet available, early estimates make it clear that “The Karate Kid” laid the smackdown on fellow new release “The A-Team.”

Said outcome was expected by those following the tracking, but given the latter film’s bigger budget and higher Hollywood profile, many media were still caught off guard by the crushing defeat. According to Deadline, the studio itself was surprised, as it apparently anticipated “Kid” earning only half of what it did Friday night.

According to preliminary data, “The Karate Kid” earned $18.8 million at the box office, while “A-Team” was good for $9.7 million. Also in the top five: “Shrek: The Final Chapter” ($4.4 million), “Get Him to the Greek” ($3.3 million) and “Killers” ($2.8 million).

Full weekend estimates are due Sunday morning.
