“Shrek: The Final Chapter” predictably picked up the pace Saturday, parlaying its matinée performance into a weekend victory over new releases “Sex and the City 2” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.”
With $43.3 million in receipts, “Shrek” scored a clear victory yet was far from overwhelming as a top Memorial Day weekend. The film’s gross is now at $133.1 million.
“Sex and the City 2” pulled $32.1 million en route to a total of $46.3 million since Thursday’s opening. The film will need a miracle on Monday to live up to even the most conservative estimates for the five day opening weekend.
“Prince of Persia” opened soft in comparison to its massive budget, but it is not as if analysts were expecting significantly more than the $30.2 million that it grossed this weekend.
