It took just three days for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” to cross the $100 million threshold domestically, and it did so by a wide margin.
The addition of $36.7 million in box office receipts Friday helped “Transformers” climb to $125.9 million so far. By weekend’s end, it should almost reach $200 million cumulative mark ($190 million is the industry estimate)–it is a lock to cross $175 million.
Though it will not top the numbers for last summer’s “The Dark Knight” (a record $203.8 million in five days), the strong performance for “Transformers” solidifies the effort as a top American film franchise. Reviewers had been cold to the sequel, and though that may hurt its longevity at the box, negative reception has not deterred its early box office onslaught.
“My Sister’s Keeper,” the only other new release this weekend, earned a modest $5.1 million Friday. It appears on track to finish fourth, behind “The Proposal” and “The Hangover.”
