Casting News: “24,” “Dexter”

They are two of television’s most well-received dramas, and they both are the subject of recent casting developments.

On the premium cable side, acclaimed series “Dexter,” set to enter its fourth season, has tapped veteran actor and “3rd Rock from the Sun” star John Lithgow to guest as a serial killer. In a release to the media, Showtime said of the character, “Lithgow will play Walter Simmons, an unassuming, mild-mannered suburbanite who has been living a dual life as one of America’s most prolific and deadliest serial killers. Dubbed the “Trinity Killer” because of his proclivity to kill in three’s, he relocates to Miami after being tracked by F.B.I. Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine). Brought on to assist in the investigation of Miami’s latest serial killer, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) becomes fascinated with “Trinity’s” unique killing methods and his ability to evade capture for almost three decades.”

Despite having just wrapped its seventh season, “24” also remains the subject of casting news. With its “Day 8” setting already confirmed as New York and actors Anil Kapoor (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and Chris Diamantopoulos (“The Starter Wife”) already cast as a Middle Eastern leader and President Allison Taylor’s new chief of staff, the show is not done making waves in the television news world. The show has also added Jennifer Westfeldt to the mix as a journalist with ties to Kapoor’s character and John Boyd as a new CTU systems analyst. The eighth season bows next January.
