The streak of box office victories for action thrillers ended this weekend as as “Terminator: Salvation” fell to family film “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.”
“Museum” earned an estimated $70 million over the four day holiday weekend, an advantage of more than $16 million over “Salvation,” which grossed $53.8 million this weekend. Adding in “Terminator”‘s Thursday showings still doesn’t change the hierarchy; its cumulative gross so far is $67.2 million.
The two new films still collectively dominated the box office, with “Star Trek” coming in third on $29.4 million. “Angels & Demons,” last week’s winner, dropped to fourth with $27.7 million while new release “Dance Flick” made little impact at fifth with $13.1 million.
