Though “Guitar Hero: World Tour” continued the franchise’s sales success, attention from many hardcore “fake rock” fans shifted to competing product “Rock Band 2,” which featured a more extensive catalog of music (especially for downloads) and a more straightforward presentation. But as the makers of “Rock Band” focus on the upcoming Beatles spin-off, Activision is aggressively hyping the fifth installment of “Guitar Hero” to signal its continued commitment to “[redefining] the music and gaming experience.”
In a press release Monday, Activision confirmed that the setlist will feature video game debuts from 25 bands, with a grand total of 85 bands appearing in the game. Acts already confirmed for the latest “Guitar Hero” installment include Kings of Leon, The White Stripes, Santana, Vampire Weekend, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Johnny Cash.
New features include a “Party Play” feature that lets players “jump in or drop out of gameplay seamlessly” and Rock Fest, which adds complexity to the game’s online play. In addition to overhauling the GHMusic Studio and adding a new game challenge system under the label Band Moments, the game also enables multiple players to form a band with any possible combination of instruments. Unlike in the past, that means bands are no longer limited to two guitars (bass and lead), one drumset and one microphone; they can instead have, for instance, “two guitars and two drums or three guitars and a microphone.”
The game launches this fall.
