American Idol 8: Historic Top 7 Results Show

There have been results shows in which “American Idol” did not wave goodbye to a contestant, but Wednesday marked the first time the judges used the new “save” feature to keep a competitor in the running.

Though his rendition of “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” was panned by the judges last night, wildcard pick Matt Giraud became the first contestant in “Idol” history to earn a second chance.

The lowest vote getter Tuesday night, Giraud was forced to encore the performance on Wednesday’s show. And, though Simon Cowell said it was worse than the prior night’s rendition and that Matt has no chance of winning, the judges opted to offer Giraud a reprieve.

Anoop Desai and Lil Rounds had joined Giraud in the bottom three.

The save is now out of play for the remainder of the season, which undoubtedly has fans of some “Idol” contestants nervous–two contestants leave next week, so there is a good chance a beloved singer could reach the end of his or her road.

The seven contestants return next week for a “Disco” themed episode.
