AMAs Performance Gives “Say Something” Another Sales Boost

A few weeks ago, the lift from a performance on “The Voice” helped A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera’s “Say Something” reach number one on the Billboard Digital Songs chart.

Though not initially hot enough to sustain that position, the song–a breakthrough for the duo and a welcome return to the top of the charts for Aguilera–did not go quietly into the night. It remained in the Top 15 on iTunes as its voices prepared for another high-profile showcase, this time on ABC’s American Music Awards telecast.

It might have lacked the buzz of Miley Cyrus’ cat performance, the wackiness of Lady Gaga’s duet with R. Kelly or the priority positioning of Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” but the latest live version of “Say Something” achieved something of immense importance: it sparked another sales surge.

Sunday’s televised performance instantly ignited sales interest in the song; at press time, it is second only to “Roller Coaster,” the latest “Music Mondays” song from Justin Bieber.

Since sales for Bieber’s “Music Mondays” releases tend to flame out within the first day or two, it is possible “Say Something” will return to number one.

Other AMAs in the top ten: Pitbull’s “Timber (featuring Ke$ha)” at #3, One Direction’s “Story of My Life” at #4 and Imagine Dragons’ “Demons” at #9.
