“Lion King” Again Wins Box Office, “Moneyball,” “Dolphin Tale” Strong

The 3D re-release of “The Lion King” has proven to be a big event–it earned another $22.1 million this weekend for yet another box office victory.

The race was a bit tighter this weekend, however, as new releases “Moneyball” and “Dolphin Tale” also crossed the $20 million mark. Based on the early estimates, “Moneyball” earned $20.6 million, while “Dolphin Tale” garnered $20.3 million. Both were well-received by critics and moviegoers, so decent holds next week are reasonable to expect.

Newcomers “Abduction” and “Killer Elite” rounded out the top five, although they were notably farther back at $11.2 million and $9.5 million, respectively.

“Contagion” followed with $8.6 million, while “Drive,” despite its good reviews, was down a big 49% to $5.8 million for seventh place.
