“Chicago Code” Premiere Ratings Not Great, “Harry’s Law” Hits Series Low

“The Chicago Code” bowed before millions of eyeballs Monday, but its weak demographic retention out of “House” might speak negatively about its prospects.

In most cases, it would be hard to argue against a series that drew 9.40 million viewers in the very competitive 9PM slot on Monday. But in posting only a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating, “Code” dropped significantly from the 4.3 with 12.32 million posted by veteran “House.” The show’s decline over the hour, while somewhat unavoidable due to the tune-out from “House” viewers, is still far from the greatest sign regarding a show’s long-term prospects.

Based on the big increase over its last original, “House” appears to have benefited slightly from FOX’s Super Bowl promotion, which included an amusing homage to the classic Mean Joe Green ad.

NBC’s “Chuck” (1.7, 5.42 million) and “The Cape” (1.3, 4.56 million) landed in their usual realm of disappointment, but “Harry’s Law” was no longer as significant a saving grace. Faced with originals from “Hawaii 5-0” and “Castle” (the first time it battled both), “Law” placed a distant third in the demo, dropping to a 1.7 with 9.14 million viewers.

NBC’s plans for “Harry’s Law” will tell an interesting ratings story, as it truly is an example of a show that is doing all the right things from a viewership perspective but completely underwhelming within the all-important, advertiser-friendly 18-49 demo.

  1. Harry’s Law sucks, it is a shame with Kathy Bates but week after week of Her saving the poor abused Negroes will get old quick…

  2. Harry’s law is the best lawyers show on TV. It is about everyday happenings, and tackles many issues that other shows are afraid to handle. I looke forward to it every week. The actors are beliveable, relate well together, and have natural ability to become the person they are playing. Even tho many plots are about a black neighbor, and black suspects, I enjoy them all, even tho I am a white viewer.. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS SHOW OFF THE AIR.

  3. As with so many other great shows that are not on the air- ratings are still ONLY MEASURING AUDIENCE BY 20TH CENTURY MEANS IN A 21ST CENTURY WORLD,

The fact is I do not have cable. I do not have rabbit ears. I use the ‘net and I watch ALL my tv programs via HULU, DIRECTON, BOXLIVE, or BitTorrent. I catch the Daily Show on its website. Burn Notice is the best show right now- and I have to wait for next season.

I still use my old TV. It has an S-VIDEO cable, as does my old laptop. So I run a cable to it and my second diplay gets my hulu window. I send my stereo out through my aux in on the stereo.

There is no reason to ever pay for cable.
There is no reason to ever pay for tv shows.
The amount of commercial time is just right- 30 seconds between breaks. Hulu said it would not carry Harry’s Law after episode 5- which is strange- when they carry a much more popular show- burn notice for all episodes. Harry’s law deserves to keep airing/vod.

When will they ever learn? Video on demand and streaming is where it is at today

  4. Harry’s Law is a great show that tells the true side of America! If people aren’t watching on Monday nights, they’re wasting their time. Every lawyer and politician should watch also. Kathy Bates give a flawless performance each and every week. And yes, I do fit into the 18-35 demographic.

  5. I think Harry’s Law is a great show! It’s witty, interesting, not like all those other law shows that are so repetitive and I love Kathy Bates! I look forward to it every week. 🙂 Watching it as I type this!

  6. My family loves this show and we even live close to the “chosen city”…we live in Dayton OH. The concept, writing and actors are superb! I hope the network does not take it off..I have been telling everyone at work to watch it.
