“Dragon” Tops “Kick Ass,” “Death at a Funeral” In Tight Box Office Race

After getting off to a strong start Friday, “Kick Ass” ended up forfeiting its number one spot at the weekend box office, according to early estimates.

At press time, it looked like fourth week film “How to Train Your Dragon” would eclipse “Kick Ass.” Estimates have the show leading very narrowly, pulling $20 million to “Kick Ass”‘s $19.8 million. Monday’s actuals could, however, fluctuate enough to change the dynamic at the top of the order.

“Date Night” followed in third with $17.3 million, narrowly eclipsing the total for remake “Death at a Funeral” ($17 million).

“Clash of the Titans,” last week’s number one, rounded out the top five with $15.8 million.

Weekend Top Ten (estimated):
1) How to Train Your Dragon – $20 million ($158.6 million)
2) Kick Ass – $19.8 million
3) Date Night – $17.3 million ($49.2 million)
4) Death at a Funeral – $17 million
5) Clash of the Titans – $15.8 million ($133 million)
6) The Last Song – $5.8 million ($50 million)
7) Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? – $4.2 million ($54.9 million)
8) Hot Tub Time Machine – $3.5 million ($42.5 million)
9) Alice in Wonderland – $3.5 million ($324 million)
10) The Bounty Hunter – $3.2 million ($60.4 million)
