The rumored-about movie adaptation of SNL’s “MacGruber” skit is finally materializing.
According to THR, Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer are in talks to star in the film, based on the SNL skit that features MacGruber (Will Forte) as MacGyver’s son–though he shares his father’s instinct for using household objects to disarm bombs and escape dire situations, he always gets sidetracked by personal issues and fails. Both Forte and Kristen Wiig, who stars as his assistant, will reprise their roles in the film.
Forte wrote the script with character creator Jorma Taccone and John Solomon. It features the decorated MacGruber pulled out of his retirement gig as a monk to stop the evil Cunth from launching a nuclear weapon. Cunth, to be played by Kilmer, had previously killed MacGruber’s bride.
Phillippe would play Piper, an army operative who is reluctantly paired with MacGruber to stop the villain.
Fast-tracked, the film is expected to hit theatres before the talked about MacGyver movie.
