Progress has begun on a remake of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” says a report in THR.
According to reports, Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original 1992 movie, and her husband, along with Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment, have begun working on a relaunch of the series. Creator Joss Whedon is not involved with the project that is in very preliminary stages–it is not even setup at a studio yet.
The remake would reportedly have neither a character nor plot connection to the popular television extension, which ran until 2003. It essentially will operate outside the preexisting “Buffy” bubble, reintroducing the lead character and concept in a “darker, event-sized movie.”
“Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this,” said Kuzui.
The title character was played by Kristy Swanson in the original film and Sarah Michelle Gellar in the television series. A new actress would assume the lead role in this project.
