Over the past few weeks, Iggy Azalea has beaten Billboard’s own website to the punch in reporting her single’s position on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her latest newsbreak is the most meaningful one yet.
Azalea confirmed Wednesday morning that her single “Fancy,” which features Charli XCX, appears at #1 on this week’s Hot 100.
The breakthrough single, which was number two on last week’s chart, dethrones John Legend’s reigning leader “All of Me.”
“Fancy,” which also led the weekly Digital Sales race with 336,000 paid downloads, becomes only the second Hot 100 number one that gives solitary lead credit to a solo female rap act. Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” was the first.
While they do not meet that specific criteria, the only other two Hot 100 #1s that credit solo female rappers were 2001’s “Lady Marmalade,” which credits Lil Kim alongside P!nk, Christina Aguilera and Mya and Ludacris’ 2003 hit “Stand Up,” which gives a featured nod to Shawnna.
Interestingly, the greatest impending threat to “Fancy'”s #1 reign is Ariana Grande’s “Problem,” which credits Azalea as a featured artist.
That song, which will receive a boost when its video launches this week, ranks at #2 on the latest Hot 100.
