In the closing moments of the fall finale, Esme (Skyler Samuels) interfered with the mutants’ plan, launched a violent assault on the Sentinel Services guards, and freed her two identical sisters (thus revealing herself to be one of the Stepford Cuckoos).
It would be a stretch to call the ending a twist. Esme’s behavior has been almost comically suspicious since her first appearance on the show, and “X-Men” aficionados immediately guessed she was one of the Stepford Cuckoos.
The ending will, however, carry significant ramifications for “The Gifted” when it returns from holiday hiatus.
Entitled “3 X 1,” the “winter premiere” airs at 9PM ET/PT on January 1. It is the third-to-last episode of the first season; the final two broadcasts will air back-to-back on January 15.
“As tensions heat up among the team at Mutant HQ, no one knows who they can trust,” says the official FOX synopsis. “Fearing for his family’s safety, Reed rethinks their future at the compound. Meanwhile, Dr. Campbell proposes an improved program to Jace that could change everything.”
In addition to fallout from Esme’s audible, “3 X 1” will surely address the death of Dreamer/Sonya. The character, played by Elena Satine, was murdered by Dr. Campbell in the fall finale.
Ahead of the New Year’s Day broadcast, FOX shared photos from the upcoming “3 X 1” episode:
