Last week’s “Lucifer” revealed a key arc for the remaining second season episodes.
Lucifer’s mother has developed a plan for returning home to the Silver City: her son should be able to cut through the gates using Azrael’s Blade.
The plan is logical, but the characters will quickly learn that execution will not be as easy as flipping a switch (or wielding a blade).
This week’s episode finds the characters confronting the challenges — and determining how to actually put the plan into action.
It also features a “case of the week” involving parents and faculty at a private school.
Headline Planet recently screened the episode. Based on the screening, we are able to share five things you can expect (very minor spoiler warning):
High-resolution production photos are also embedded. The episode airs at 9PM ET/PT on FOX:
Emotional Fuel For The Fire
Azrael’s Blade is not strong enough to cut through the gates on its own. It needs to be ignited with a flame.
The belief is that Lucifer, known as the “light bringer,” is the only being capable of igniting the blade.
Capability is not the same as ability, however. Lucifer definitely can start the fire, but he does not know how to do it. Dousing it with alcohol and striking a match, sadly, is not the answer.
The best guess is that Lucifer can light the flame by channeling intense emotional energy. The episode finds Lucifer — and his mother and brother — attempting to determine exactly what kind of emotion is required.
Guesses include anger, arousal and fear.
Is There More To Her Story?
Lucifer and Amenadiel (and the viewers) know the gist of their mother’s plan: use Azrael’s blade to return to the Silver City.
But is there something she is not telling them?
She seems to be in a particular rush to return home. Amenadiel does not initially think much of his mother’s urgency, but Lucifer is suspicious.
Is Lucifer paranoid because he fundamentally distrusts his mother? Or is she indeed withholding something from her sons?
Monday’s episode begins to place the spotlight on that line of questioning.
Case Of The Week: Big Little Lucifer
This week’s case is not a direct parody or homage, but it will likely resonate with “Big Little Lies” fans.
The team investigates the murder of a private school admissions officer. The pretentious faculty and parents attempt to keep up appearances, but it becomes clear that they have plenty of secrets and animosity boiling beneath the surface.
Lucifer & Trixie On The Case
Not simply important to the murder investigation, the Starford school is relevant to Lucifer’s attempt to manage his emotions. The school, after all, is committed to the idea that children can be taught to control their feelings.
Naturally, Lucifer wants to soak up all the knowledge he can about controlling his emotions. Luckily, he has a way to inconspiciously access the school and its wealth of knowledge: Trixie.
By positioning Trixie as a prospective student, Lucifer can pose as her father, tour the campus, and gain insights that could be useful in his effort to ignite the blade.
Lucifer begins the endeavor as a quest to manage his emotions, but it also brings Trixie’s feelings into the spotlight.
It, moreover, assists with the murder investigation.
Chloe & Maze On The Case
In addition to the Lucifer-Trixie pairing, this week’s episode finds Chloe and Maze working together on the murder investigation.
While attending a school function, the characters develop a plan to flush out the killer.
Given that they’re smart and capable, you can probably assume the plan works, to a degree.
Given that this is “Lucifer,” you can probably assume the plan is thrown for a loop.
