Wednesday, Artists Of Now, Then & Forever’s “Forever Country” leapfrogged The Chainsmokers’ “Closer (featuring Halsey)” on the US iTunes single sales chart. Save for a short window on September 9 and 10 — when Lady Gaga’s “Perfect Illusion” debuted — it marked the first time since August 11 that “Closer” was not in the #1 position.
Thursday, The Weeknd’s new “Starboy (featuring Daft Punk)” also overtook “Closer,” pushing The Chainsmokers’ smash down to #3. It marked the first time since August 11 that the song had fallen below #2.
Friday night, “Closer” returned to the chart’s apex.
As of press time at 11:10PM ET, “Closer” holds leads over “Forever Country,” “Starboy,” and all other songs on the US iTunes store.
In addition to dominating on the digital sales front, “Closer” is also a smash on streaming services: it generated more than twice as many audio streams as the #2 song (Major Lazer’s “Cold Water”) this week. It will also reach #1 on this week’s Mediabase pop radio chart.
In short, “Closer” is an absolute smash.
