Monday, news came that total viewership for Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony was down 34% versus that of last year’s broadcast.
MTV’s preshow endured a similar decline.
According to live+same-day data posted by Showbuzz, Sunday’s 8-9PM preshow posted a 0.99 adults 18-49 rating and 1.90 million total viewers. The adults 18-49 rating trails last year’s mark (1.33) by 26%, while the viewership tally is down by 33% (from 2.84 million).
Last year’s preshow numbers, it should be noted, were down sharply from those of the 2014 broadcast (1.86, 3.78 million).
This year’s preshow featured performances by Alessia Cara & Troye Sivan, Jidenna and Lukas Graham. The 2015 edition featured Walk The Moon, Nick Jonas, a medley by Todrick Hall and the premiere of Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams” video. 2014’s preshow was headlined by Fifth Harmony and Charli XCX.
Airing across 11 Viacom networks, Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony drew 6.5 million total viewers. The 2015 edition reached 9.8 million.
