Ratings Update: ABC’s “Wicked City” Starts Poorly

Fast National Ratings: ABC’s “Wicked City” got off to a dismal start in the live+same-day ratings.

Per fast national data, Tuesday’s premiere drew a mere 0.9 adults 18-49 rating with 3.301 million viewers. It easily ranked as the 10PM timeslot’s lowest-rated and least-watched broadcast network program.

While competition from FOX’s World Series coverage surely did not help matters, one cannot ignore the facts that “Wicked City” fell substantially from its “Agents of SHIELD” lead-in and fared so poorly in comparison to CBS and NBC’s 10PM programming (all of which also faced the MLB game). It may have done slightly better without baseball competition, but there is no reason to believe “Wicked City” would have done well.

ABC led into “Wicked City” with the aforementioned “Agents of SHIELD” (1.4, 3.833 million viewers). Earlier in the night, it aired “The Muppets” (1.4, 4.291 million) and “Fresh Off The Boat” (1.4, 4.045 million).

Done no favors by its positioning against game one of the World Series, ABC’s “Wicked City” premiere posted a modest overnight household rating.

Per Nielsen Metered Market data, the drama posted a 2.4 overnight household rating in the 10PM hour.

While the rating only slightly trails the 2.7 posted by lead-in “Agents of SHIELD,” the presumption is that the show is older-skewing. As a result, the differential in the key adults 18-49 may be greater. That number will be revealed by 11:15AM ET.

And even if the differential between the shows was insignificant this Tuesday, this week’s “Wicked City” was theoretically boosted by premiere week curiosity. It, following the trajectory of many new dramas, may slip as that curiosity fades in the coming weeks.

Earlier in the night, ABC aired “The Muppets” (3.3 overnight household rating) and “Fresh Off The Boat” (2.9 overnight household rating).
