Single Sales: Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean?” Fared Best in NY, LA, Chicago, Boston

In addition to debuting at #1 on the all-encompassing Billboard Hot 100, Justin Bieber’s new “What Do You Mean?” starts at #1 on the Digital Songs (sales) chart.

According to Nielsen Music, that #1 debut was produced by an opening week sales total of 337,466.

The New York City market was responsible for 13.3% of those paid downloads. That percentage – unsurprisingly, given that NY is the country’s most populous city – represents the greatest sales contribution by a US market.

Los Angeles and Chicago, naturally, were responsible for the next-greatest percentages of purchases. Nielsen Music attributes 7.4% of the song’s first week downloads to LA; 3.9% are credited to Chicago.

Other top markets included Boston (#4, 3.4%), Philadelphia (#5, 3.4%), the San Francisco Bay Area (#6, 2.7%), Washington, DC (#7, 2.4%), Dallas/Fort Worth (#8, 2.3%), Miami (#9, 1.9%), Atlanta (#10, 1.9%), Houston (#11, 1.9%), Phoenix (#12, 1.6%), Detroit (#13, 1.5%), Minneapolis/St. Paul (#14, 1.5%), and Denver (#15, 1.4%).
