“Idol'”s Alex Preston Climbs iTunes with “Say Something”

Update: Alex Preston’s rendition of “Say Something” had ascended to #44 by press time.

Quickly developing a reputation as the music competition series equivalent of steroids, A Great Big World’s “Say Something” is helping another contestant climb the iTunes Single Sales Chart.

This time, the beneficiary is “American Idol” hopeful Alex Preston, whose powerful rendition of the song cracked the iTunes Top 100 shortly after Wednesday’s performance.

As of press time, it had reached #75 on the digital retailer’s overall track chart. None of the other Top 5 contestants, meanwhile, had even cracked the Top 100.

The ballad, which ended up peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, was launched into ubiquity when AGBW and collaborator Christina Aguilera delivered a live rendition on “The Voice.” It later served as the defining performance for Alex & Sierra, who won the third season of the US “X Factor.”

While Preston’s version probably will not soar as high as the Alex & Sierra rendition, which hit #1 on iTunes, it is clearly resonating with “Idol” fans and music buyers.
