Radio Moves: Katy Perry’s “Birthday” Goes Top 40, Avicii Hits Top 10

It does not officially impact Top 40 until this coming week, but with a healthy dose of early radio support, Katy Perry’s “Birthday” is working its way up the airplay chart.

According to Mediabase, “Birthday” was Top 40 radio’s 38th-most-played song for the seven days ending April 18. Officially a top 40 hit based on spins, the song scored the week’s 35th-largest-audience with an estimated 9.64 million pop radio impressions.

The high-profile Perry brings excitement to the bottom of the chart, but there were also noteworthy moves in its upper reaches.

Justin Timberlake’s “Not a Bad Thing” advanced three places to number six for the period ending April 18, while Avicii’s “Hey Brother” officially cracked the top ten (and sits at number ten). Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” catapulted from #34 to #21, while Neon Trees’ “Sleeping with a Friend” moved the necessary three places to reach number 25.

Nico & Vinz’ breakthrough “Am I Wrong” jumped seven places to become the 26th-most-spun song at Top 40 radio, while Lady Gaga’s “GUY” advanced six places to thirty two.
