“American Idol” to Cut 11 Top 31 Contestants Before Semifinals

In the closing moments of Thursday’s “American Idol,” host Ryan Seacrest revealed that several of the competition’s Top 31 semifinalists will be eliminated prior to taking the stage for next week’s performance rounds.

He provided no further details, but thanks to a Friday morning press release from FOX, “Idol” viewers now know exactly how many performances to anticipate next week.

According to the release, only ten female and ten male contestants will perform in the live semifinal rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday. That means that five girls and six guys (including the loser of the Supervote between Ben Briley and Neco Starr) will not receive the opportunity to compete for America’s vote.

Following weeks of audition and preliminary rounds, the live “American Idol” competition is officially set to begin. The top ten girls will perform Tuesday, the top ten guys will perform Wednesday and the top thirteen finalists will be officially revealed Thursday (America will determine the five female and five male finalists; the judges will complete the group by each selecting a wildcard).
