Making a retroactive case for why “American Idol” should have gone with an all-alumni panel, original winner Kelly Clarkson delivered a biting criticism to some of Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards performers.
“Just saw a couple performances from the VMA’s last night. 2 words…. #pitchystrippers,” Tweeted Clarkson, who later added that such a criticism “WAS me being nice!”
Though Clarkson did not identify the specific targets of her insult, the “strippers” remark would be most appropriate for Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus, who both stripped down to bare essentials in their performances.
Always more about extravagance than raw musicality, Sunday’s Awards seemed to particularly shift the thinking in that direction. Save for that referring to Bruno Mars’ “Gorilla” and portions of Justin Timberlake’s medley, few of the performance critiques have focused on singing.
