It will be interesting to see how critics explain this one.
After recently firing bantamweight Miguel Torres for Tweeting a rape-themed joke, UFC president Dana White seems to have made his own entry into the taboo humor category.
Responding to a comment from @dicker410, White wrote, “learn how spell dummy!! Assassination!!! The one you spelled is what must have happened to you in prison.” Provoked or not, the implication of that comment is clear–White seems to be quite clearly delivering play-on-words “humor” about prison rape.
He has Tweeted a number of times since then and had still not deleted the comment as of press time, so it is unlikely the “I was hacked” line is forthcoming.
Last week, White released Torres after he made waves on Twitter with the crack, “If a rape van were called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone loves surprises.” Though the comment came shortly after UFC “lifer” Forrest Griffin drew controversy (but kept his job) for Tweeting “Rape is the new missionary” and Torres’ joke was apparently inspired by material from the cable shows “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Workaholics,” the UFC was quick to release Torres for the scandal.
White attributed part of the disparity to the different reactions Torres and Griffin displayed after the controversy ensued. Interestingly, however, he confirmed that any future rape Tweets from UFC personalities would lead them to the same fate as Torres: “You want to see consistency. Let’s see if anybody does that again. I double dare you to send another tweet like that again.”
Does that mean White will be firing himself?
