When Brock Lesnar first rose to dominance in the UFC, fans were clamoring for a superfight between Lesnar and then-top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, who was participating in outside promotions.
The matchup was never arranged, and Fedor’s three-fight losing streak has effectively killed interest in such a fight.
With a Lesnar-Fedor fight no longer demanded by fans, attention turned to the possibility of a Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem bout. Both are known for their impressive physiques, and both have shown some tremendous strength and athleticism inside the cage.
That fight is now official. Overeem, who was dropped from his deal with Strikeforce and forced to vacate the promotion’s heavyweight title, will debut in sister promotion UFC on December 30, taking on a returning Lesnar in a five-round main-event.
The winner of the fight, which will headline what is expected to be UFC 141, gets a title shot at the winner of Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos.
