“The Help” Strong at Weekend Box Office, “Conan,” “Fright Night” Bomb

Given its A+ Cinema Score, “The Help” was obviously going to parlay word-of-mouth into a box office victory this weekend. Still, few predicted the other newcomers would perform so poorly–each came in below the already-disappointing projections.

“The Help” declined only about 20% from its debut weekend total for $20.5 million, topping the $16.3 million for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” New release “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World” landed in third on just $12 million.

“Conan the Barbarian” was a major miss with just $10 million, while the well-reviewed 3D remake of “Fright Night” could only score $8.3 million for fifth place.

“One Day,” the weekend’s fourth major new release, only earned $5.1 million for ninth place.
