While Chris Jericho’s critical Tweet about CM Punk’s on-air character was exaggerated to tease a future storyline between the two, that does not mean he loves everything about the buzzworthy wrestler’s television presence.
Speaking to Between The Ropes, Jericho said that he felt this week’s RAW promo with CM Punk and Kevin Nash was ineffective by going “too inside.”
“The Punk thing worked so good because it was something different…It was Punk vs. the status quo of the WWE,” explained Jericho. “It wasn’t so much the insider topics. I’m sure guys like you and me thought that was funny but your average person doesn’t have a clue about stuff like that. They just know that Punk is doing something he’s not supposed to be doing and saying something he’s never said before. That’s also why I don’t think the thing (Kevin) Nash worked out so well this week because they went too inside.”
Jericho was not alone in his criticism–numerous observers felt references to guaranteed contracts, Kevin Nash’s past wrestling characters and the “vanilla midget” line were doomed to fall flat with the overwhelming majority of WWE’s audience.
