As joint NHL and WWE fans likely noticed, Sheldon Souray of the Dallas Stars was present at ringside for WWE Summerslam.
Though he was not part of the show, his presence there was not entirely limited to that of spectator. While making her way to the ring for a match with Beth Phoenix, Divas Champion Kelly Kelly kissed the hockey veteran.
Reports say Kelly Kelly and Sheldon Souray are dating; Souray even identified her as “my girl” in a Twitter post ahead of the WWE pay-per-view.
What interested some insiders, however, was the fact that Kelly Kelly would openly show affection to a non-WWE performer who had no storyline involvement in the match. As F4WOnline.com correctly notes, while there is certainly no “rule” that WWE Superstars should refrain from dating non-wrestling personalities, it is something of an unwritten guideline that performers do not openly flaunt their relationships (particularly ones that don’t figure at all into the wrestling scene) in front of fans, since it kills some of the “fantasy.”
That would particularly be true in the case of Divas like Kelly Kelly, who are meant to serve as heartthrobs for the core WWE demographic.
This, of course, is not a phenomenon central to wrestling–there is often criticism when objects of fan desire (such as attractive contestants on “American Idol”) reveal that they are not, in fact, available.
Obviously, if Kelly Kelly got permission to reference her boyfriend (conceivable since he is a known professional athelte), the issue would be a moot point. Whether that happened was unclear at press time.
