Somewhat held-hostage by the unfolding of the John Cena and CM Punk storyline, WWE’s Summerslam card is only about half-full with only a week of television left to promote the show.
Of course, it is clear that any buys above the baseline are going to hinge on how engaged fans are in the Cena-Punk storyline. None of the other storyline options, save for the possibility that fans are indeed hooked on Randy Orton vs. Christian, represent compelling “draws” at this point.
Including a spoiler from WWE SmackDown!, here are the confirmed matches:
WWE Champion CM Punk vs. WWE Champion John Cena
World Champion Christian vs. Randy Orton in a No Holds Barred Match
WWE Divas Champion Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix
Sheamus vs. Mark Henry
WWE’s internal booking sheet, which is consistent with angles on RAW, also features Alberto Del Rio vs. Kofi Kingston and United States Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. Alex Riley.
Of course, WWE has a number of singles programs from which it can create the remaining few matches. In addition to those two, which may or may not get swapped out, WWE has potential matches in The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio, John Morrison vs. R-Truth, Cody Rhodes vs. Ezekiel Jackson and Wade Barrett vs. Daniel Bryan.
