UFC President Dana White confirmed in a video statement Saturday that Nate Marquardt, who was set to main-event UFC on Versus 4 against Rick Story, has been released from the leading mixed martial arts promotion.
“I’m sure you heard that Nate Marquardt is out, it’s true,” said White. “He failed his medicals. Not only is he out of this fight and out of the main-event on Versus, he will no longer be with the UFC.”
Details remain unclear on what medical issue prompted the UFC to pull the plug on its relationship with Marquardt, but F4WOnline.com cites sources that believe it was a medical consequence of his weight-cut for the 170 pound Welterweight affair.
Charlie Brenneman will replace Marquardt against Rick Story, but as the fight is less marquee, Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry is the new main event.
