Not that a replacement opponent would have made for an ideal scenario anyway, but May’s scheduled UFC 130 main-event between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard has been postponed.
UFC confirmed that Edgar, the defending Lightweight Champion, and Maynard, the challenger, were both forced to withdraw from the date due to injury.
Edgar reportedly suffered broken ribs in training, while Maynard is dealing with a knee injury. An MMAFighting report says that Edgar’s issue is more serious.
As noted, the Edgar-Maynard match essentially had to happen given the fact that their prior bout at UFC 125 ended in a draw. Anthony Pettis, the final WEC Champion, had originally been slated to face the winner to unify the belts, but because the Edgar-Maynard series required another match, his title opportunity was delayed (and he booked another fight).
There are no plans to add another fight to the card, which takes place in Las Vegas Memorial Day Weekend. Co-main-event Matt Hamill vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will be bumped to the main event slot, while Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson will move into the co-main-event position.
