The race for number one was tightly-contested, but if estimates hold-up, family film “Rio” will claim a second consecutive week on top.
The film’s estimated weekend box office gross sits at $26.8 million, which was enough to hold off the healthy $25.8 million for “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family.” New release “Water for Elephants” sat behind with $17.5 million for third place.
With Easter in the air, “Hop” improved on last week’s take, earning an additional 16% week-over-week as it scored $12.5 million for fourth. Its weekend total thrust it over the $100 million cumulative mark.
“Scream 4” fell to fifth, dropping a hefty 62% for $7.2 million. An all-around box office disappointment, it now relies on upcoming DVD sales to fend off the disaster label.
New release “African Cats” landed in sixth with $6.4 million.
