Rumors that FOX’s “Glee” was planning to dedicate its plum post-Super Bowl episode to either Michael Jackson or Bruce Springsteen proved untrue, although according to an Entertainment Weekly report, a song from the late MJ will indeed make the episode.
Sources say that the episode, which will center around the local high school football championship game as well as a regional cheerleading competition, will feature a performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as part of a mash-up. The other component of that mash-up has yet to be revealed.
Other artists to be covered include the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum and Katy Perry. Songs from all artists had been expected for future episodes; in the latter’s case, the record-breaking success of “Glee”‘s Katy Perry cover “Teenage Dream” made future homages a certainty.
At one point, an Elton John tribute was eyed for the Super Bowl episode, although plans for the Elton John theme have been pushed back to later in the season.
Both Dot Marie Jones (Coach Beiste) and Darren Criss (Blaine) are scheduled to appear in the heavily-anticipated episode, which should have no trouble setting the show’s ratings record when it airs this winter.
