Deadline Hollywood reports that despite a dominant Friday box office performance, “Iron Man 2” will not be topping the weekend record, currently held by “The Dark Knight.”
“Iron Man” earned an estimated $52 million at the Friday box office, which still keeps it on track for the predicted $125-$135 million opening. But any hope of the film outperforming those lofty opening weekend projections appears to be out the window.
If the Deadline figures and forecast hold up, “Iron Man 2” will rank seventh on the all-time list for opening days (the record belongs to “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which earned $72.7 million), fifth on the all-time list for Fridays (the record also belongs to “New Moon”) and fifth on the all-time list for opening weekends (behind “The Dark Knight,” “Spider-Man 3,” “New Moon” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”).
“Nightmare on Elm Street” represented “Iron Man 2″‘s nearest competitor, with an estimated $3.2 million in Friday receipts.
